Local Art Scene: This Week in the Twin Ports

"Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what's inside you, to make your soul grow." — Kurt Vonnegut

One of the best ways to stimulate your own creativity is to go out and see the variety of ways creativity is expressed by others. This week in the Twin Ports, and the weeks ahead, should give you plenty of stimulation.

Let's start with tomorrow's Second Friday Art Crawl. Here's my recommendation. Start over in Superior at the Historic Board of Trade Building at 916 Hammond Avenue where it intersects with Broadway. There are four stops to make, so if you are off from work early you can make it a more leisurely stroll as there will be more to see in Duluth.

Now that it's spring textile artist Erika Mock has been hosting an Open Studio on Friday's from Noon till 7 p.m. Her space is in Studio 222 above the Luke Chiropractic Clinic. Erika is offering 10% off her colorful spring wings (scarves and wraps like those pictured here.) She also has a selection of pulse warmers waiting to envelope your beautiful arms... and a colorful space that shimmers when the sun shines.

The North End Art Gallery is featuring work by Judie Phillips, Karin Kramer, Kathleen Pattison in a show titled Animals in Dynamic Color.  They will be having their Artists Reception from 5-7p.m. The Gallery is located at top of the stairs one flight up from The Spirit Room, which may be having live music, but is worth checking out for the mural by Erik Pearson. The wait staff is friendly and the aesthetically designed space is a nice spot for a bump after a hard day at the office.

Before you leave the building be sure to do a walk-through at the Red Mug to see Carla Hamilton's Pocket Full of Unicorns.

Now it's time to cross the bridge to stop in at Pierce & Piszczek Fine Pianos for their Second Friday hospitality. Located at 405 E. Superior Street their doors will be open from 6-8:30 p.m.
(Parking available behind the building after 5:30 p.m.)

From here, make you way up to the Red Herring Lounge to see Jim Richardson's Underwater Photography. There's nothing quite like The Big Lake, and here's your chance to see it up close in a way you never have before. Starts at 6 p.m.
