Art In Bayfront Park, Monica Ares @ Washington, Tall Ships in the Harbor and More

Hard to believe we're already approaching the middle segment of August. I realize that NBC would love it if you spent this time couch-sitting in front of their coverage of the Olympic Games, but in the event you want to get your blood circulating, and your senses aesthetically assaulted by something more than swimmers, gymnasts and commercials.... We have a number of noteworthy events coming up in the local arts scene.

Briefly...

Shawna Gilmore's whimsical work is at Lakeside Gallery.
Thursday, August 11, there will be an opening reception for a show called Collusion featuring raku pottery by Richard Gruchalla and Carrin Rosetti, and paintings in acrylics and oils by Jeffrey Schmidt and Kristen Wasyliszyn. The reception is conveniently from 5 - 7 p.m. tomorrow eve at Lizzards Gallery in Downtown Duluth. The show will be on display till the end of September. The gallery is located at 11 West Superior Street.

Friday, August 12, AJ Atwater's exhibition 400 Paintings opens online. Details here. Or read the interview with AJ about her show here.

Art in Bayfront Park is just around the corner, August 18-21. It's advertised as Free, but you will pay $5 for parking if you take your car down there. But it's worth it. It's worth that just for the smell of the food vendors' tents and trucks.

Monica Ares has an exhibition coming to Washington Galleries. The Opening Reception for her show "In Their Midst" will be Friday, August 19 from 5:30 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.  I had a chance to meet with her this past weekend and look forward to sharing her story here in advance of the show.

The Tall Ships are coming back to Duluth next week. The event coincides with the Art in Bayfront Park event... We'll find out if this is a good thing or not when we try to find parking next week. The development outside of the Canal Park district has expanded the arts and tourism region of our city extensively. We've come a long ways from the run down semi-abandoned waterfront of the early 80's.

In conjunction with the Tall Ships there will be a ship-themed display at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum (across the street from St. Luke's, or just above the Gitch parking lot. It's free and a worthy destination nearly any time of year.

And for the next seven weeks Kathy McTavish's Duluth Quantum Computing Project  #dqcp will be ongoing throughout all... Thursdays thru Saturdays. Check the hours and check it out.

FWIW, an article in Fortune on the first programable quantum computer. What do you think of that?

Meantime, guess what? It's time to start another day. Make the most of it.

PS: Congratulations, U.S. women's gymnastic team. Awesome performance.... what poise! We can't help but be impressed. Thank you.
