Twin Ports October Arts Update

It's October so we're seeing more orange on the trees, and then orange pumpkins and orange Halloween signage announcing that Halloween season is here, and with it the First Annual Hallowade, an all day event at Wade Stadium here in Duluth. You'll undoubtedly hear more about it as the month progresses.

And we might as well remind you that the In Situ show we shared here has a live painting component that will take place every Wednesday in the DAI John Steffl Gallery through the month of October. The Duluth Art Institute's other two shows this month include Reservation Pop (Wendy Red Star) and artwork for animal lovers  called Forever Home in the 4th floor Hallway Gallery.

This Month's Arts Update comes with a little help from our friend Esther Piszczek, Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT).

Lyric Opera of the North presents the St. John Passion
Two Performances:
Saturday, October 14 at 7:30 p.m.; Pre-performance panel and Q & A at 6:30,
Sunday, October 15 at 3:00 p.m.; Pre-performance panel and Q & A at 2:00,
Lincoln Park Middle School Auditorium, 3215 W. 3rd Street

"Music by Johann Sebastian Bach. World Premiere at Leipzig, April 7, 1724. Special guests, Twin Ports Choral Project, are joined by a stellar cast of soloists, the LOON orchestra, and a chorale chorus comprised of singers from the Twin Ports and beyond, in this staged production of Bach’s St. John Passion.

Originally written as a liturgical piece, Lyric Opera of the North presents St. John Passion here as an opera. With stage direction by Robert Neu, these performances will showcase the power and timelessness of this piece, which tells the story of the last days of the life of Jesus Christ. In this, our operatic acknowledgement of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we find a piece of enormous beauty, startling violence, and an uncannily timed conversation about “us” and “them”. Running time: 2 hours 30 minutes. Sung in German with English supertitles." [Personal plug: My husband Paul will be singing in the LOON Opera Chorus for this production!]

Windows to the West

Window to the West Art Display, 2001 West Superior Street
"Photographer Nik Nerburn and painter Brad Tollefson are creating a collaborative art exhibit on the streets of West Duluth’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, titled “Window to the West.” A selection of Tollefson’s paintings and Nerburn’s photographs will be on display in the storefront windows of 2001 West Superior Street for six months. Lincoln Park is undergoing a rebranding as the “Lincoln Park Craft District,” with many new craft businesses and artists moving in, providing tangible benefits to the neighborhood and its residents. “Window to the West” focuses on people and places on the margins of the neighborhood’s transformation, however, and their worries about affordability, displacement, and change. The work will be on display in two empty storefronts at 2001 West Superior Street, through a partnership between the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Housing and Redevelopment Agency, which owns the Seaway Hotel building."
