The Duluth Superior Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday and we still have two more days to go. As in years past you can count on a mix of local and international films that promise to reward. It's my aim to park myself in a theater seat tomorrow. You can find the full schedule here at the DuSu website. This is a Free Gift to the community, though donations are accepted and appreciated.

Opening Reception for Virginia Alexander at Lakeside Gallery, 4431 E. Superior Street.
Virginia is featuring her original acrylics collectively titled 'Superior Hiking Trail: Duluth Series' at the gallery. This is a group of acrylic paintings depicting the 'city' sections of the larger Lake Superior Trail System. These trails invite hikers to travel in woods, along rivers and open fields rich in texture and atmosphere. For more follow this link to Facebook.

Mondays, June 4, 11, 18, 25, 5:30 p.m.,
Tangling Mondays, Mount Royal Library, 105 Mount Royal Shopping Circle.
This group meets in the the former Yarn Harbor space, which was taken over by the library awhile back (on the left when you walk in). It is open to anyone, but primarily focused on pattern drawing. Bring your supplies and something you want to finish or start. No instruction, no fee, no organization. It's wonderful to tangle together, if schedules align, and lovely to tangle alone. If you find yourself alone, no worries, another Monday is right around the corner. Enjoy!

The Duluth Art Institute offers a regular Tuesday open art-studio session at the Depot. People of all abilities practicing all artistic mediums are invited to bring their own supplies and join the weekly group. Cost: $5 plus a DAI membership (first session is free).

It's blossomed into an arts and cultural center. You may have already heard about their monthly live jazz weekends in the Carlton Room. Next weekend Bruce Henry will be Cookin' @ the O. Next week yoga instructor Julie Deters will be sharing.

Zeitgeist Parklet Grand Opening Party, Zeitgeist Arts, 222 E. Superior Street "What is a parklet? Parklets are pedestrian “mini-parks” that take over an on-street parking space to provide tables, seating, greenery, bike parking, or public art. An example is the parklet outside of Duluth Coffee Company on Superior Street. "The event will take place outside of the Zeitgeist Arts Building in the Parklet. After a ribbon cutting ceremony, there will be light snacks from the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe, and live music from Abe Curran. This event is free and open to the public!"

Parklet Art Proposal Deadline - Calling ALL Artists!
Zeitgeist hopes to integrate art into their Parklet by having community members submit proposals for 2D public art centered around the theme of "Creative Community" to be featured on panels surrounding the Parklet. Adeline Wright hosts this evening of storytelling and open mic journal sharing in the style of the Moth and Mortified podcasts. There will be featured storytellers and a musical guest.
Members of the audience are also welcome to sign-up on the night for an 8 minute open mic journal-sharing segment. This is an opportunity for anyone to read a journal entry, or other hilarious, serious or heart-wrenching writing from their youth or to simply share a story. Suggested Donation: $5 at the door. Creative Expression Evening with Janice, Yoga North, 4628 Pitt Street, Suite 208
This two-hour class includes a brief discussion on the creative process, one hour of gentle yoga with guided imagery followed by an inspirational art project to take home. It takes place on the third Wednesday of every month. Class cost: $35

The evolution of Duluth's Lincoln Park District has been creating quite a buzz. It's impressive what happens when businesses work together to solve problems, cast a vision and make things happen. Join Lincoln Park for its first annual Summer Solstice Block Party. There will be public art creation, a steamroller creating large format block prints out in the street, a full artisan/craft show, music, food and more! Querida Presencia: new works by Jonathan Herrera in the John Steffl Gallery, Jason Pearson's Travels with My Twin: selected works from the Pearson Brother's Collection in the Corridor Gallery, and Boreal Ornament: new works by Tara Austin in the George Morrison Gallery. Tweed Museum of Art on the campus of UMD always has a rich variety of work. The Tweed is a gift to the community. If you have never been, I would recommend making it a bucket list item for this summer. Seriously. See Current Exhibitions HERE.
