Local Art Seen: Martin DeWitt in the Zeitgeist Atrium

“Degrade first the arts if you'd mankind degrade.”—William Blake

Martin DeWitt is a familiar and respected name in local art circles, and beyond. A former curator and director of the Tweed Museum of Fine Art, he is currently Professor Emeritus in the School of Art & Design, Western Carolina University, with many additional credits in a long career.

His abstract paintings have developed a trademark feel while continuously evolving as he experiments with media and the possibilities of texture and color. The vivid colors in his work don’t just pop off the canvas, they explode.

His latest work is currently on display at the Zeitgeist Atrium, in a joint show with his nephew Andrew Webster. Superior Street is torn up, but the Zeitgeist is still accessible. If you’re downtown for sidewalk days this week, or for any other reason, make your way down to see Martin’s stellar new paintings.
