Just a reminder that even if it isn't in the news it can still be happening, and will be this evening. Art walkers can begin at 6:00 p.m. at Washington Studios for the All Co-op Group Show plus the unveiling of a new Minnesota Scene Mural. There will be music, and wonderful roses, they tell me... and birds on a hill. Oh wait, those are images from a Beatles son. There will be music, though, by DeSe and Steve Sola.
The mural, by Beth Carpenter and Sue McIntyre, has been months in the making I've been told, featuring Minnesota flora and fauna. It's not what you will expect and is purportedly filled with hidden treasures for viewers to discover. Can't make it tonight? The gallery will be open Saturday from 1-5 p.m.
The new Gallery Chair, Flo Matamoros, will be there to share new prints of her intricate line work. Matamoros has finally started drawing on a larger scale. Other artists whose work will be displayed include: Ryan Tischer, Karolyn Carpenter, Russ Gran, Monica Ares, Mary Hunt, Andy Hardman, Caleb Wood, Michael Converse, Sam Pranger and more.
Tonight , Prøve Gallery is celebrating its 2nd year anniversary with an opening exhibition entitled, "Mind the Transitions" and a film premiere of independent skateboard filmmaker, Mike Rapaich's, "Charisma". "Mind the Transitions" features works by: Patrick Sharrow, Paul Hartman, Jake Durham, Taylor Kline, Jonas Michilot, Jake Paulsrud, Luke Lieski, Stephen Pestalozzi, & SkatRadioh. There is a common denominator in this month's show. All the artists here have been inspired by skateboards, which quite naturally feeds into the new, much anticipated skateboard film, "Charisma", which will premiere at 8:00 p.m. The Crunchy Bunch will do their usual record spinning throughout the evening.
My recommendation is that you make sure to stop at the Minnesota Wine Exchange next to Double Dutch on the corner of Lake and Superior and check out A.J. Atwater's exciting new abstracts which are on display there. If you want to see "Charisma" you may want to negotiate your schedule so you get it all.
I'm not trying to make it a difficult evening for you but Ivy Vainio's photography exhibit at Trepanier Hall (202 West 2nd Street) is also a "must see." If you are a Duluth Public Library regular you have no doubt seen some of Ivy's work there. This event is from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and I'm not sure what to tell you at this point. I have usually tried to encourage gallery-goers to slow down and engage the work, but then there is so much to see. The title of her show, which also includes a calendar signing, is Naamijig: Honoring Our Traditions. Naamijig means "The ones who dance."
If you can't get it all in, well, there is always tomorrow. It's Second Saturday! Enjoy.
