Local Art Seen: Washington Studios Artist Cooperative, Part One

A taste of France.

Saturday was the annual (or perhaps semi-annual) open house/open studios day at the Washington Studios Artist Cooperative, the former Central Hillside junior high school that has been recycled for low-income community housing, specifically set aside for artists and creatives. Located at the corner of Lake Avenue and Positively Fourth Street, it has been a stepping stone for a number of artists who have now moved into established careers including Adam Swanson, Ryan Tischer and most recently Jonathan Thunder.

The Gallery featured paintings, photography and sculpture by the residents. There were also refreshments next door and tables where artisans were selling wares. In addition, a number of studios were open as well.

Washington Studios was developed by Artspace Projects, Inc., a non-profit real estate developer that is committed to long-term stability in communities and artist empowerment.

Meantime, art goes on all around you. Get into it.
