Louie Kemp Book Signing Agenda for Thursday Evening at Karpeles

C.S. Lewis, in his book The Four Loves, dissects the meanings of the four Greek words that have been translated as "love" in the English language. They are Storge (Affection Love), Phileo (Friendship Love), Eros (Romantic Love) and Agape (Divine Love).

Friendship love begins as a kind of companionship. What I remember most about Lewis' description of Phileo is how you may go separate ways, but when your lives cross again ten years later, that resonance, that special bond you shared will pick up precisely where you left off.

When I moved to New Jersey in 1964, the year I turned 12, it was the beginning of a companionship relationship with the kid next door who was 11 and a grade behind me. The six years Tom and I were neighbors we shared many adventures, some pretty wild ones. After graduation, his life and mine diverged significantly. I was college bound, he was to become a biker.

Over the course of many decades we may have gotten together once every ten years, but that special bond we built as kids had been established. As different as our lives were--I had a career in advertising and PR, he a borderline outlaw with a heart of gold--it was always good to re-connect.

This is what I saw in Louie Kemp's Dylan & Me. For myself, the big takeaway was how Bobby Zimmerman never got so famous that he was too cool for her Herzl Camp companions Larry and Louie. Their lives were not parallel, but they periodically intersected, most notably in the Rolling Thunder Revue.

Tomorrow evening, August 15, Louie Kemp will be speaking at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum as part of the John Bushey Memorial Lecture Series.

The event will kick off at 5:30 PM with music by Gene LaFond, Amy Grillo and Dave Bennett, followed by the lecture from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. Following the lecture Louie Kemp will be on hand to sell and sign his new memoir hot off the press.

Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is located at 902 East First Street in Duluth. The evening’s agenda is:

Local Art Scene: August Happenings A-Plenty

When I was eight years old my grandparents took me out of school for three weeks to ride a train across the country from Ohio to Reno, Nevada. Uncle Dale, Aunt Ellen and my cousins lived in nearby Sparks. Eventually they moved to California where both taught at San Jose State University.

This all came to mind alongside the observation that it is now August, and one of the premiere car shows of the year--Hot August Nights--takes place in Virginia City, Reno and Sparks this weekend and next. Classic cars really are an artform.

And no, you don't have to go to Nevada to see classic cars. We have a very strong classic car collector community right here in the Northland. Every Wednesday evening you will find them here and there around the Twin Ports region, and in conjunction with events like Carlton Days (July) or Spirit Valley Days and Far West Days later this month.

Did you know that August used to be called Sextilis in Latin because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar? You probably didn't even know that the calendar only had ten months in the first seven or so centuries A.D.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary "August" means consecrated, or venerable. More could be said, but let's just get on with what's happening.

This group meets in the the old Yarn Harbor space, which was taken over by the library awhile back (on the left when you walk in). It is open to anyone, but primarily focused on pattern drawing. Bring your supplies and something you want to finish or start. No instruction, no fee, no organization. It's wonderful to tangle together, if schedules align, and lovely to tangle alone. If you find yourself alone, no worries, another Monday is right around the corner. Enjoy!

"The Hillside streets will become safer and more colorful this summer when local artist, Moira Villiard, in partnership with Zeitgeist and local residents, creates four creative crosswalks at currently dangerous intersections. The crosswalks and intersections will be painted to attract more attention to crosswalks and the people using them, promoting pedestrian and bicycle safety by slowing traffic in the residential area, while also highlighting neighborhood culture and identity through public art. Zeitgeist will lead community engagement efforts to allow residents to influence the design of the murals that they will be walking, biking, and driving through daily. Neighbors are encouraged to come out to help paint the design."

There's a LOT more happening than what is listed here. The Tweed and Duluth Art Institute always have things happening and art to see, as do all your favorite galleries. There are weekly Movies in the Park on Fridays, classes of all kinds, and a flourishing writing community, with periodic book signings and readings at area bookstores.

One book signing event of note is taking place at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum on August 15. Louie Kemp, who grew up here in the Northland, will be sharing stories from his newly released Dylan & Me.

The full title of the book is Dylan & Me: 50 Years of Adventures. The event will take place at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum on the evening of Thursday, August 15. Hosted by the Duluth Dylan Fest Committee, the John Bushey Memorial Encore Lecture with Louie Kemp will give Northlanders the opportunity to hear first-hand never-before-heard stories about Bob Dylan.

Louie will be speaking, and signing copies of his book, at four locations in the Twin Cities before making his way North. You can read more about how his friendship with "Bobby" by reading yesterday's blog post if you have not yet done so.

Spotlight on Rolling Thunder: Louis Kemp's Dylan & Me, and Scorsese's Netflix Release on the Revue

It's been quite a while since we've had a "slow year" in terms of energizing roll-outs pertaining to the life and work of Bob Dylan. 2019 appears to be no different. Nearly everyone (in Dylan Land) is aware of the gathering in Tulsa in a couple weeks. Most have read that there will be an art exhibit at the Glicrease Museum there featuring portraits painted by Bob. If not, Rolling Stone gave it some ink here. The exhibit is called Bob Dylan: Face Value and Beyond. Perfect timing to coincide with The World of Bob Dylan Symposium from May 30 to June 2.

Another pair of echoes can be heard in the much anticipated Martin Scorcese adaptation of the massive quantities of footage filmed during the epic Rolling Thunder Revue. The Scorsese film will launch June 12 on Netflix. It will also have airings in a number of cities around that same date. For fans in Minnesota, The Walker Cinema in Minneapolis will be airing the film on June 11 @ 7:00 p.m.

Wed this and Tulsa with the release of Louis Kemp's book, Dylan & Me, and and you have a trifecta, better known in the local Minnesota vernacular as a "hat trick."

A little background on Louis Kemp. When I moved to Duluth in 1986 there was a well-known local business called Kemp's. The Kemp family Louis descended from what in the seafood. business Louis was a third generation heir to product lines that included imitation King Crab, a frozen seafood product line, of which I had been a regular consumer.

But the real Louis Kemp story begins with his childhood friendship with a kid named Bobby Zimmerman at Camp Herzl, a Jewish summer camp in Webster, Wisconsin. Bob was 12 and Louis 11 when their friendship developed. It was a friendship that despite divergent trajectories has lasted a lifetime. Experiences they mutually shared included the Buddy Holly Winter Dance Party at Duluth Armory just days before "the music died." In 1983, Bob was best man at Louis' wedding on London Road here in Duluth. But most significantly, Louis was the architect of the epic Rolling Thunder Revue.

Performers on the tour included Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Joni Mitchell, Ronee Blakely and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Bob Neuwirth assembled the backing musicians from the Desire sessions, including violinist Northland favorite Scarlet Rivera, bassist Rob Stoner, and drummer Howie Wyeth. The tour included 57 concerts in two legs—the first in the American northeast and Canada in the fall of 1975, and the second in the American south and southwest in the spring of 1976.

As behind-the-scenes producer of Dylan’s legendary Rolling Thunder Revue, Louis went on to travel with him all over the world, a trusted ally and friend. His book, Dylan & Me, is now available for pre-order on his website, and at Amazon in mid-June.

Kemp's book opens with this setup: “It was at summer camp in northern Wisconsin in 1953 that I first met Bobby Zimmerman from Hibbing. He was twelve years old and he had a guitar. He would go around telling everybody that he was going to be a rock-and-roll star. I was eleven and I believed him.”
