Superior is seeking to establish itself as "Halloween Town" again.

If you measure holidays by the revenue they generate Halloween appears determined to catch up to Christmas, at least in the U.S.

Goin' Postal's Andy and Becky Perfetti are at it again. They thrive on pulling people and businesses together to create memorable events. It's that time of year again... and here's the rundown.

The Goin' Postal Fall Music Festival and Poltergeist Pub Crawl is back this Saturday, October 29^th in Superior. Here's the announcement I received earlier today.

Join in the many festivities taking place throughout Superior's North End. The Music Festival will feature 15 bands at five venues and 11 taverns will be participating in the Pub Crawl. (see complete schedule below) .

Wear your costume and tour the North End of Superior! Stop in participating taverns and have your favorite cocktail! Celebrate Halloween in style with your friends, or come and make new ones!

 

The Pub Crawl starts at 5pm and ends at Top Hat Tavern for the Costume contest! Enjoy Live Music along the way at multiple venues! Win big prizes at the Top Hat Costume Contest!

There is a $20 entry fee. Purchase your pub crawl pass at either Top Hat Tavern, Tower Avenue Tavern or Lost in the 50's. All proceeds from the pub crawl go to support the Bluebird Foundation in their mission to provide grants and scholarships to local kids in the arts!

 

The Bluebird Foundation is a 501(c)(3) founded in 2014 dedicated to supporting regional youth in the performing arts.

Less than one month to 2021. 17 days to the first day of winter. Hope you are all staying active with creative projects during this period of social hibernation. As Bob Dylan once sang, "It gets discouraging at times but I think I'll make it by the saving grace that's over me."

For starters, big shout out again to Esther Piszczek for keeping us in touch with the local arts scene. No one is happy that there have been so few art openings or receptions this year. Duluth welcomed a new director to the Tweed, Dr. Anja Chávez, and it seems like the next day we were in lockdown. According to their website our governor has requested that the Tweed remain closed till Spring. Definitely a disappointment. You can go to the Tweed website and see some of what you are missing.

Rather than get too repetitive here I am just going to send you to the Twin Ports Art Blog and briefly talk about something else. There is still plenty to do this month. Unfortunately it's nearly all virtual.

New Topic

What is it about faces that so fascinates us?  I've been drawing faces since pre-school. Why? I don't know. In part it is a fascination with how much expressiveness can be generated with a minimal quantity of detail. I'm sure that's part of it.

It's interesting how many different cartoon characters there are, each distinct, generally drawn with minimal detail, but full of a variety of expressions. Compare Dilbert to Dennis the Menace to Beetle Bailey or Mandrake the Magician. It's endless. 

My sketchbooks are filled with little drawings of faces, funny animals and designs. Sometimes I like to repeat a design until it morphs into some other design. (If you want to learn new designs, you might consider checking out Esther Pizczek's Zentangle classes.)

Speaking of faces, at the grocery store someone asked me today, "Is that you, Jack?" These masks have done more than hidden our smiles. They've concealed our identities. That was the first time this has happened, though not the first time I myself wanted to ask... "Is that you?"

One more thing about masks. Please don't do this:

 

I took four fotos of masks in parking lots this past week, not quite enough for a Wordless Wednesday blog post. Perhaps if this were in an art gallery someone might call it art. I'm calling it an object lesson in what not to do with your used masks.

Opening Reception: The Journey Home – Chapter 2, Paintings by Samuel J. Zimmerman, American Indian Community Housing Organization, 202 W. Second Street

This free exhibit features paintings by Samuel J. Zimmerman. During the opening last night, Samuel created a live painting of a shawl dancer. His work is created from his inspiration, his Ojibwe heritage, the strength and spirit of the traditional jingle dress and shawl dancers, and the beauty of Gitchi-Gami. Refreshments were served.

What’s Your Wunderkammer? Experimenting in 3D with Paper and Collage, Duluth Art Institute at Lincoln Park, 2229 W. Second St.
"Duluth artist Susanna Gaunt introduces techniques in collage and shaping paper to create two-and three-dimensional pieces in this workshop. Susanna’s work is inspired from observations of the natural world, natural history museums and their 17th century precursors, the Wunderkammer; as private collections of art and rare specimens, these curiosity cabinets strove to reveal the wonders of our world.

"The class will discuss what they collect and observe and how it can inspire the creative process. From there, they will use collage and shaping paper. Both 2-and 3-dimensional techniques will be introduced and demonstrated to allow for a variety of forms of expression. Time will be given for participants to generate ideas and experiment with collage to create their own artworks based on what they collect and what inspires them.

"A selection of vintage boxes will be available for $10, paid directly to the artist. Participants are also welcome to bring their own small boxes or containers (about the size of a shoe box). The cost of this workshop is $25 for Duluth Art Institute members and $30 for nonmembers."

"Rabbett Before Horses is a special one-hour PBS WI documentary presenting an in-depth portrait of the Northern Wisconsin-based artist from his rock band days on the Fillmore stage in San Francisco, to his return to his ancestral home on the Red Cliff Reservation, through the advanced mathematical theories scrolling through his mind, to the belief among his fellow Ojibwe that his intricate paintings come from his dreams.

Opening Reception: Tommy Kronquist: Medium Control, Corridor Gallery, Duluth Art Institute, 506 W. Michigan Street"Local artist and business owner Tommy Kronquist began his design career on the winter slopes of Minnesota. Merging his passion for snowboarding with his interest in art, a company was born: Medium Control. Long before designing however, Kronquist joined a competitive winter sports circuit that included traveling with his snowboarding sponsors. Through them he was exposed to a market heavy with design fads. During this time, Kronquist gravitated towards working with sales representatives to present his design work. Eventually, the ebb and flow of multiple seasons brought with it the desire to create timeless designs, work that would be relevant for more than a season, or a year, or even a decade. Kronquist’s work presented in the DAI Corridor Gallery embodies his classic minimal designs." On View: through February 9

Opening Reception: Improvisational Compositions: Not Our Grandmothers’ Quilts, Duluth Folk School, 1917 W. Superior Street
"Featuring works by Esther Derby and Mary Mathews. All quilts involve design. In 2018 and 2019 Mary Mathews and Esther Derby studied with renowned quilt artist Nancy Crow. You’ll notice that some of the quilts in this exhibit bear a resemblance. That’s because they were based on the same design prompt: Use a simple motif and reversals, with one flat color and one glowing color. Other quilts emerged from different prompts. The artist may be more or less constrained given the prompt. In either case, the artist applies principle of design within those constraints. Through repeated use of the same prompt, the artist’s voice develops. As you look at the quilts in this exhibit, see if you can deduce the design prompts behind the quilt." On View: through April 2

Oil Painting: Harps Alla Prima with Matt Kania, Duluth Art Institute at Lincoln Park, 2229 W. Second Street"Local artist Matt Kania teaches an alla prima painting class with a live model playing the harp. The class runs on three consecutive Tuesdays. The first class features the live model while the class focuses on capturing the shapes and movements through oil sketches and photographs. In the remaining two sessions the class will work from the oil sketches and photographs to complete a large oil painting. Painting alla prima is an Italian term which means “at first” and is also known as “direct painting” or “wet on wet” oil painting. Using this technique, painters will complete a painting without waiting for the paint layers to dry completely, focusing on shapes, color value, paint applications and brush strokes. Class Cost: $125 for DAI members and $150 for nonmembers. Face and Figure Drawing for Beginners, Duluth Art Insitute at Lincoln Park, 2229 W. Second Street

"Artist William Wise teaches a five-session face and figure drawing course for beginners. Students will learn observation and detail skills needed to accurately lay out and draw faces and figures on paper. The course covers classic formulas for drawing the human figure and face through the instruction of gestural techniques, using observation and detail to get accurate drawings on paper. The class focuses on getting the features where they belong and building the likeness of many images. Local Art Scene: August Happenings A-Plenty

When I was eight years old my grandparents took me out of school for three weeks to ride a train across the country from Ohio to Reno, Nevada. Uncle Dale, Aunt Ellen and my cousins lived in nearby Sparks. Eventually they moved to California where both taught at San Jose State University.

This all came to mind alongside the observation that it is now August, and one of the premiere car shows of the year--Hot August Nights--takes place in Virginia City, Reno and Sparks this weekend and next. Classic cars really are an artform.

And no, you don't have to go to Nevada to see classic cars. We have a very strong classic car collector community right here in the Northland. Every Wednesday evening you will find them here and there around the Twin Ports region, and in conjunction with events like Carlton Days (July) or Spirit Valley Days and Far West Days later this month.

Did you know that August used to be called Sextilis in Latin because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar? You probably didn't even know that the calendar only had ten months in the first seven or so centuries A.D.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary "August" means consecrated, or venerable. More could be said, but let's just get on with what's happening.

"Each session will begin with an hour of movement and breath work to release tension and make space in the body and mind that allows for the flow of creativity. Spend the second hour of class working in a group setting on an art project of your choice. The group will be guided through a visualization that allows each participant to build their own imagery to use upon completion of the visualization. Bring your own yoga mat and art supplies. Paper, pencils and ink will be provided. All levels of experience are welcome.

Tangling Mondays, Mount Royal Library, 105 Mount Royal Shopping Circle
This group meets in the the old Yarn Harbor space, which was taken over by the library awhile back (on the left when you walk in). It is open to anyone, but primarily focused on pattern drawing. Bring your supplies and something you want to finish or start. No instruction, no fee, no organization. It's wonderful to tangle together, if schedules align, and lovely to tangle alone. If you find yourself alone, no worries, another Monday is right around the corner. Enjoy!

Open Studio at the Duluth Depot, 506 W. Michigan Street
The Duluth Art Institute offers a regular Tuesday open art-studio session at the Depot. People of all abilities practicing all artistic mediums are invited to bring their own supplies and join the weekly group. Cost: $5 plus a DAI membership (first session is free).

Creative Crosswalk Painting with Moira Villiard, 11th Ave E & 5th St.
EdNote: Moira (Rhymes with Theory) has gained a lot of recognition for her significant role at AICHO and passion for making a difference through creative community service. This is but one of her many projects.

"The Hillside streets will become safer and more colorful this summer when local artist, Moira Villiard, in partnership with Zeitgeist and local residents, creates four creative crosswalks at currently dangerous intersections. The crosswalks and intersections will be painted to attract more attention to crosswalks and the people using them, promoting pedestrian and bicycle safety by slowing traffic in the residential area, while also highlighting neighborhood culture and identity through public art. Zeitgeist will lead community engagement efforts to allow residents to influence the design of the murals that they will be walking, biking, and driving through daily. Neighbors are encouraged to come out to help paint the design."

There's a LOT more happening than what is listed here. The Tweed and Duluth Art Institute always have things happening and art to see, as do all your favorite galleries. There are weekly Movies in the Park on Fridays, classes of all kinds, and a flourishing writing community, with periodic book signings and readings at area bookstores.

One book signing event of note is taking place at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum on August 15. Louie Kemp, who grew up here in the Northland, will be sharing stories from his newly released Dylan & Me.

The full title of the book is Dylan & Me: 50 Years of Adventures. The event will take place at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum on the evening of Thursday, August 15. Hosted by the Duluth Dylan Fest Committee, the John Bushey Memorial Encore Lecture with Louie Kemp will give Northlanders the opportunity to hear first-hand never-before-heard stories about Bob Dylan.

Louie will be speaking, and signing copies of his book, at four locations in the Twin Cities before making his way North. You can read more about how his friendship with "Bobby" by reading yesterday's blog post if you have not yet done so.
