Quilts Are Magic: Scott Starfire Lunt @ The Kruk, UWS

Last night was the opening reception for Scott Lunt's quilt exhibition at the Kruk Gallery, UWS. Once again I will remind readers to learn where this little gallery is located in Holden Hall, home of the school's studies for Fine and Applied Arts. There is a convenient three-slot parking space on Caitlin right outside the hall entrance with the gallery directly on your right. It's convenient for stopping during a lunch hour when you can't make evening events like opening receptions.

In 2014 the artist visited McTavish Quilt Studio with his mother and came away inspired by possibilities he'd never considered before. He ended up getting hooked. Since that visit, he's made nearly a quilt a month, drawing from the fabric of Duluth, both figuratively and literally. He takes inspiration from both the quilt environment and music scene in which he is enmeshed.

Lunt sees the process of cutting, piecing, working with color and texture as something akin to conjuring spells. The quilts produced become evidence of his magic.

What's interesting are the stories each tells. There's a sense in which you can guess where an idea was formed and it is the problem for which each design is the solution. For example, how do you say "Quilts are magic?" There are many solutions, but Lunt chooses to say it in Morse Code, selecting a colors scheme that is also intentionally left to be decoded. His quilt "For Gram" utilizes symbols to tell his grandmother's story, her faith being a central part of this story.
